Dr. Heather Farmer

My love of horses began at age nine, when I got my first pony. I was hooked from the start, and horses have been a part of my life ever since.

As I began showing, I became fascinated by how horses move and how their movement affects their performance. That interest, combined with my love of caring for horses, led me to a career in equine veterinary medicine.

After graduating from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2006, I completed a neonatal intensive care internship at the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, Virginia. There, I honed my skills in neonatal medicine, emergency treatment of colic, soft tissue injuries, and postoperative care.

I then moved to Central Florida and began working as an associate veterinarian. In 2010, my family welcomed our son, Johnathan Edward Farmer, and I took another exciting step by opening Equine Performance in July of that year. In 2012, we welcomed our daughter to the family.

At Equine Performance, we take pride in providing full-service equine veterinary care with a focus on lameness and performance. I believe in looking at the whole horse, considering every aspect of its health and management to help it feel and perform its best.

Over the years, I have competed in hunters and jumpers and have even tried eventing. Today, I compete in the adult jumpers with my horse Chili and ride dressage with my horse, Rubi Red Schues. My experiences as a rider and horse owner have deepened my interest in sports medicine and shaped the way I practice.

I understand the concerns that come with caring for and competing with horses because I have experienced many of them myself. From challenges under saddle to the everyday details of horse management, I value the opportunity to draw on both my professional and personal experience to help my patients and their owners.
